Felicia and Dara join forces with Ric to try and convince Scott to set aside Jason and Brenda's murder conviction. Sonny, Carly, and Courtney rally around Jason and Brenda. Jason tries to ease Brenda's fears.

Jason embraces a frightened Brenda and urges her not to give up hope. Sonny vows to do whatever it takes to get Brenda and Jason out of prison. Sonny pulls Brenda into an embrace and whispers his promise that he will get her out of jail. Sonny explains to Jason that he is going to arrange for him and Brenda to escape while they are being transported to prison. Ric informs Sonny and Carly about the new developments in the case and the real killer coming to light. Sonny is reluctant to believe Ric's claim about the real killer.

Alexis is reinstated as Jason and Brenda's attorney. Sonny questions Courtney's involvement in trying to get evidence to clear Jason and Brenda. Ric tells Sonny that he no longer cares what he thinks about him. At their sentencing, the judge gives Jason and Brenda the term of life in prison. Alexis addresses the judge and requests that Jason and Brenda's murder convictions be vacated in light of new evidence. After reviewing the new evidence, the judge dismisses the charges against Brenda and Jason. Everyone, with the exception of Faith and Skye, are overjoyed by the turn of events. Carly thanks Ric for helping to free Jason.

Carly gives Sonny a tour of the site of her new club and they are very much in love. Sonny thanks Ric for helping exonerate Brenda and Jason. Sonny gives Ric his permission to work with Carly. Ric fills Sonny in on his past connection to Alcazar. Jason remains distrustful of Ric. As Carly relates the tragic tale of the original speakeasy to Sonny, an unseen gunman opens fire on them.

Sonny jumps to protect Carly from the gunman. Sonny realizes the gunman was only firing blanks and orders Ric to let him go. Sonny then tells Ric to follow the gunman to learn who sent him. [The gunman meets with Faith, who hopes he has been followed.] Shortly thereafter, Sonny arrives at Faith's room and encounters Ned. Carly matter-of-factly tells Ric that he will never replace Jason in Sonny's world.

Sonny warns Ned that he is in over his head with Faith. [Faith admits to an angry Ned that she sent the shooter to scare Sonny and claims they have Sonny right where they want him. Ned warns Faith not to make another move against Sonny without his knowledge.] Sonny tells Ric he wants to send Courtney away to college to give her a better life and keep her safe from the danger that surrounds him and his family. Ric is intrigued to learn Courtney and Jason are a couple.

Sonny plans a romantic getaway at a cabin in the woods for him and Carly. Sonny summons Ric to the penthouse before leaving town. Jason arrives looking for Sonny and clashes with Ric. Ric taunts Jason with the news Sonny wants to send Courtney away to college. [Jason and Courtney plan to go to the cabin to tell Sonny their news together.] Sonny tells Carly that he would never allow Jason and Courtney to have a relationship. Carly wants to have a baby with Sonny.

Carly and Sonny share some intimate moments on their romantic getaway together. They are interrupted and called back to Port Charles when they learn drugs have been planted in Carly’s club. Ric manipulates Elizabeth into telling Sonny that Jason and Courtney left town together and that they have been seeing each other behind his back.

Carly tries to convince Sonny that Jason and Courtney wouldn't have run off to elope. Carly defends herself to Sonny and claims he only has himself to blame for not seeing the growing attraction between Jason and Courtney. Ric "reluctantly" tells Sonny about Jason and Courtney's loft. Sonny is furious to realize how long Jason and Courtney have been together and vows to put an end to their relationship. Sonny feels betrayed by Jason.

Carly tries to defend Jason and Courtney's relationship to Sonny, who remains adamant in his stance that Courtney can't get involved with Jason. [Jason and Courtney are rescued and Jason is taken to the hospital.] Sonny and Carly learn of Jason and Courtney's accident and head to the hospital. Monica informs Sonny that Jason needs emergency surgery. Brenda arrives and shocks Sonny and Carly with the news that she and Jason are still married. Carly accuses Brenda of still being in love with Sonny. When Jason wakes up, he tries to explain his relationship with Courtney. Sonny says he understands that Jason cares for her but they cannot happen.

Sonny insists that Jason end his relationship with Courtney. Sonny gets to Jason when he points out that Courtney wouldn't love him if she knew the entire truth about what he did for a living. Sonny tries to convince Jason that ending his relationship with Courtney would be the best thing he could do for her. Courtney tells Carly she is confident she will have a future with Jason. Carly hopes things turn out the way Courtney wants but remains skeptical that they will. Ric puts an end to Carly's tirade against Elizabeth.

Carly tells Sonny he is wrong to try to keep Jason and Courtney apart. Sonny is pained by his actions but insists he is doing the right thing because he wants Courtney to have a better life. Courtney vows to Carly that she isn't giving up on Jason. Carly urges Courtney to fight for Jason. Courtney confronts Sonny, who tries to convince her to walk away from Jason. Sonny and Courtney's encounter takes an emotional toll on both of them. Jason overhears Courtney declaring her love for him to Sonny.

Jason is short with Sonny, who gives him an assignment. Later, Jason warns Faith not to make another move against Sonny or else there will be retaliation. Faith is frightened by Jason's intensity. Sonny offers to give Courtney a better life and assures her she will get past her feelings for Jason. Courtney angrily rejects Sonny's offer. Courtney is crushed when Jason tells her to stay away from him. Carly tries to explain Sonny's actions regarding Jason and Courtney to Ric. Brenda goes to see Jason but encounters Sonny instead, which Ric sees. Jax informs Carly of his and Brenda's upcoming wedding and suggests it would be best for all concerned if Sonny were otherwise preoccupied on that day. Ric informs Carly that Sonny and Brenda are at the penthouse together. Sonny and Brenda say goodbye to one another.

Carly and Sonny argue about Sonny's insistence that Jason and Courtney can't have a relationship. After Carly storms off, Brenda approaches Sonny. Sonny kisses Brenda, which Carly sees. A devastated Carly flees unseen but later seems to regain her inner strength. After the kiss, Sonny admits to Brenda that he loves her but explains that he isn't in love with her. Sonny wants his future to be with Carly and wishes Brenda happiness in her future with Jax. Sonny and Brenda part, each giving the other their freedom.

Carly is tortured by memories of seeing Sonny and Brenda's kiss. Sonny voices his love and commitment to Carly at Lily's grave. Faith wants Carly's club opening to be a disaster. Carly accuses Ric of being a little too eager in offering his help. Carly tells Courtney that she lost Sonny to Brenda. After giving a thinly veiled speech, Carly sneaks away without speaking to Sonny. Carly ends up at Jake's, where one of Faith's underlings drugs her drink. Jason refuses to leave the club opening at Sonny's request just because Courtney is there.

At Jake's, Faith orders Fowler, her subordinate, to drug Carly's drink. Carly drinks the drugged cocktail and quickly becomes disoriented and incoherent. Ric comes to Carly's rescue when Fowler tries to hit on her. Ric promises to call Jason but then pockets Carly's cell phone. Carly continues to sink lower in her despair, as she believes Sonny is going to leave her for Brenda. Ric takes Carly to a cheap motel room where she ends up passing out. Ric begins to undress an unconscious Carly. Jax calls off his wedding to Brenda and accuses her of wanting to be with Sonny. Courtney tells Sonny that Carly saw him kissing Brenda. Jason unleashes his anger at Sonny for hurting Carly. Sonny insists he loves Carly and sets out to find her to make things right. Sonny is surprised when Brenda arrives at the penthouse and explains about her wedding that never happened. Sonny feels for Brenda but insists he needs to find Carly to let her know that she is the woman he needs in his life.

Sonny confronts Faith and Ned demanding to know what they did to Carly. Faith denies any wrongdoing to Sonny but later admits to a furious Ned that she had one of her men drug Carly's drink at Jake's and claims the last time she saw Carly was when Ric led her away. Jason fears for Carly's safety and points out to Courtney that she could easily end up in Carly's shoes if they were to continue their relationship. Courtney tells Jason that Ric hasn't been home all night. Meanwhile, Carly is mortified when she wakes up unclothed next to an equally unclad Ric in the motel room. Ric tells Carly they slept together. Jason is angry at Sonny for hurting Carly. Carly plans on telling Sonny the truth about sleeping with Ric, who tries to convince her otherwise. Carly calls Jason and asks him to come and get her. Sonny goes to Carly in Jason's place. Carly unleashes her anger on Sonny over his behavior with Brenda and is on the brink of telling him she slept with Ric.

Carly is shocked when Sonny announces that he wants and loves her. Carly doesn't tell Sonny about her night with Ric. Sonny and Carly return home and make love before going to her club. At The Cellar, Ric and Carly agree not to tell Sonny what happened between them.

Jax accuses Sonny of using and hurting Brenda. Jax vows to get revenge on Sonny. Sonny turns down Ric's offer to be his legal counsel. Ric subtly manipulates Carly to do him a favor after mentioning he thinks Sonny should know that he and Carly slept together. Carly later pleads Ric's case to Sonny. Sonny speaks with Ric alone and wants to know what he has on Carly.

Ric denies to Sonny that he has anything to use for leverage against Carly. Still suspicious, Sonny orders another background check on Ric to try and determine what it is he really wants. Carly accuses Ric of trying to blackmail her when he once again asks her to try and convince Sonny to let Ric act as his legal counsel. Carly speaks with Sonny, who wants to know what Ric is holding over her head. [Courtney is grabbed as she's leaving Kelly's and taken to a remote cabin in the woods. Jason is tipped off to Courtney's whereabouts and rescues her.] Jason and Courtney are deliberately stranded at the cabin together. As Carly is about to tell Sonny that she slept with Ric, Sonny gets a call alerting him to the fact that Jason and Courtney are at the cabin together.

After receiving an anonymous tip, Carly fails in her attempt to keep an angry Sonny from going to the cabin. A pained Jason tries to convince Courtney that it is better for her if they don't see each other but she refutes his argument. Jason and Courtney are drawn into a kiss as Sonny and his men come bursting through the door. Jason defends Courtney when Sonny voices his anger at her not telling him about Faith's threat. Sonny warns Jason that Courtney could be killed if their relationship continues. Faith taunts Carly, who ends up physically attacking her. Protecting Faith, Zander breaks up Carly and Faith's fight. Carly warns Zander to carefully consider who he takes sides with.

Jason tells Sonny he believes he convinced Courtney that it was over between them. Jason and Courtney are both devastated by their break up. Carly urges Courtney to fight for Jason. Wanting to cause friction between Jason and Sonny, Ric subtly encourages Courtney not to give up on Jason. After learning of Alexis' arrest. Sonny becomes concerned for baby Kristina.

On a night when time stands still in Port Charles, Sonny is shot to death and
goes to Heaven where he encounters Luke as St. Peter. Sonny is certain he won't
be admitted to Heaven but Luke/St. Peter explains that because so many people
love Sonny, he is being sent back to earth to be given another chance to earn
the right to be admitted to Heaven. The only stipulation, however, is that Sonny
must do what those in Heaven want him to. Sonny fails his first test after Alexis
tells him that he is Kristina's father and he goes against her wishes, insisting
he'll be a part of his baby's life. In Sonny's second test, he trades places
with Jason, but also fails this trial when he refuses to let Jason call the
shots. Sonny refuses to sleep with Skye and seek revenge against Jax and the
Quartermaines, thus failing his third test. In subsequent tests, Sonny fails
to show forgiveness to Taggert but does score points with his unconditional
love for his children. Sonny is given a taste of Heaven when Carly presents
him with his son. Thinking he doesn't deserve such happiness, Sonny leaves Heaven.
Luke/St. Peter gives Sonny an option, stay in Heaven as he deserves or return
to life. Not yet ready to spend eternity in Heaven, Sonny chooses to return
to the land of the living.

Sonny accuses Jason of becoming reckless (when he is arrested for almost beating Fowler to death) because of his feelings for Courtney. Sonny and Jason reach their breaking point with regard to Courtney. Ric subtly blackmails Carly into putting in good word for him with Sonny. Sonny and Carly look forward to having a baby of their own.

Jason and Sonny continue to feel the tension over the issue of Courtney. After hearing Courtney's resolve to live her own life and make her choices, Carly encourages her to stand up to Sonny and fight to be with Jason. When Sonny returns home, Courtney gets in Sonny's face and makes it clear she is going to be with Jason in the end. Sonny argues with Carly for encouraging Courtney not to walk away from Jason. Sonny stops his rant when Carly becomes dizzy.

Carly is momentarily thrilled at the prospect she might be pregnant, but is worried about the evening with Ric. Sonny wants to take Carly to the hospital for a pregnancy test and she is saved after getting a call that Catherine died at the club. Sonny suspects Faith had a hand in Catherine's death.

Carly admits to Courtney that she might be pregnant. The tension increases between Sonny and Jason, who reports that a hit man named Sam is headed to town. Faith meets with Sam, who is a beautiful woman. Faith plans on taking her lethal revenge against Sonny at the memorial service Carly has planned at the club.

Sonny voices his fear to Jason that his life choices present a risk for Carly and their unborn child and he is determined to eliminate the threat the hit man poses. Elizabeth witnesses Carly's dizzy spell and later tells Ric she thinks Carly is pregnant. Sonny and Carly both admit their fears for their baby and vow to keep the baby safe from harm.

Jason tells Sonny they have to let Courtney make her own decisions about her life and that they cannot order her to deny her true feelings. Ric answers a phone call meant for Sonny and Carly and learns that Carly is pregnant. Carly is unsettled when Ric confidently "assures" her that she couldn't be pregnant with his child.

Jason is forced to choose between continuing working for Sonny or having a relationship with Courtney. Sonny fires Jason when it becomes clear that Jason will pursue a relationship with Courtney. Carly is taken aback when Ric tells her he didn't use protection when they spent the night together. Carly angrily insists that Sonny is the father of her baby and warns Ric never to suggest otherwise. Ric offers his help to Sonny, who makes it clear that Ric will never be able to replace Jason. Carly welcomes Sam to Catherine's memorial service unaware she is the killer Faith hired to shoot Sonny. Sam takes aim at Sonny as he and Carly share a dance.

Sam shoots into the crowd at The Cellar. Sonny and Carly are unscathed but Ric is shot. Ned accuses Faith of hiring the hit man and demands to know where she got the money. Edward overhears and realizes that Faith used the money he gave her to pay for the hit. Ned severs his ties with Faith and warns her that Jason will come after her. Sonny takes Carly to the hospital to be checked and both are relieved to learn that Carly and her baby are fine. Jason searches The Cellar for clues to the shooting and gets a lead on Sam. Sonny admits to Carly that he fired Jason. Ric taunts Carly with the fact he could be the father of her baby. Sonny is unsettled when Elizabeth says that death will always follow him.

Jason realizes that Faith poisoned Sam and takes the information to Sonny. Jason is taken aback when Sonny refuses his help because of his involvement with Courtney. Carly advises Courtney not to live her life in fear. Carly refuses to leave town without Sonny. Faith returns to her room to find Sonny waiting for her. Sonny makes it clear he knows what Faith did and offers her a glass of sherry. Carly tells Ric she is on to his game and wants to know what Ric expects to get from Sonny.

Sonny threatens to kill Faith but leaves her with a warning. Ric tells Carly that he has proven his loyalty and looks forward to a mutually beneficial relationship with Sonny. Ric is insulted when Sonny offers him money as compensation for being shot at Carly's club. Realizing Sonny will never fully trust him, Ric goes to Faith and declares he wants to help her destroy Sonny. Benny calls Jason for help with Sonny.

Benny informs Sonny that the Five Families have called a meeting. Sonny and Benny are unaware that Faith called the meeting on Ric's orders. Ric plans on having Faith expose Sonny's weaknesses at the meeting and then unite with the other families to remove Sonny from the picture. Ric offers to go in Benny's place but Sonny isn't interested. Ric scares Carly when he maintains that Sonny's life is in danger. Carly tells Jason about the meeting and asks for his help. Faith makes Benny, and therefore Sonny, look incompetent at the meeting. Benny suffers a heart attack and dies as Jason arrives.

Carly warns Courtney that Ric isn't everything he seems to be and confesses that she slept with him. Courtney realizes Ric could be the father of Carly's baby. Jason and Sonny argue about Benny's death and why he was at the meeting in the first place. Ric arrives at the warehouse and hears Taggert questioning Jason and Sonny. Jason defends Courtney when Sonny starts to blame her for the situation they are all facing.

Sonny and Jason almost come to blows in the wake of Benny’s death. Carly diffuses the situation and makes Sonny take her home. [Courtney wonders if everyone would be better off if she and Jason ended their relationship. Jason refuses to end his relationship with Courtney or feel guilty about the love they share.] Sonny and Jason are both privately tormented by the rift between them.

Sonny and Jason come face to face at Benny's gravesite. Sonny and Jason are momentarily able to put their differences aside but the tension soon returns. Ric tells Elizabeth he plans on taking Benny's place in Sonny's organization. Sonny privately hopes that Jason will soon return to the fold and end his relationship with Courtney.

Ric plans on making himself indispensable to Sonny, who has called a meeting with his rivals to prove that he is still in control. Ric's plans are derailed when Sonny announces he will attend the meeting himself. Sonny humiliates Faith in front of the other families and asserts his control of the territories. Faith vows revenge against Sonny after she is dismissed by the other families. Sonny orders Ric to kill Faith. Carly warns Ric that she plans on telling Sonny the truth about their night together unless Ric resigns and leaves town.

Ric refuses to kill Faith, just as Sonny suspected he would. Sonny offers to put Ric on retainer to act as his attorney in light of his success in that area. Carly plans on telling the truth about her night with Ric but stops herself when she realizes how much it would hurt Sonny. Ric tells Carly why he couldn't resign. Carly accepts Ric's explanation but warns she'll tell Sonny everything if Ric makes a move against Sonny. Sonny makes a heartfelt plea to Courtney to end her relationship with Jason.

Jason stops Sonny as he pleads with Courtney to remove herself from Jason's life. Carly leaves with Sonny and later tries to convince him to relax. Courtney doesn't understand why Sonny acts the way he does. Sonny has a nightmare in which an unseen person pushes Carly down a flight of stairs.
